About AVEDA PDF Print E-mail

AVEDAFor more than two decades, AVEDA has worked to expand the boundaries of beauty and business, developing extraordinary products made from plants while creating a company with a conscience. AVEDA takes an ethical approach to business: We aim to create products that make intelligent use of the plant's resources; we support the rights of indigenous peoples; we do not conduct animal testing. In our view, these policies make good sense financially, environmentally, and morally. In fact, we believe they are the only sustainable path to the future.

Plants are the starting point for virtually everything we do. They provide essential benefits that support all Earth's life-forms. Through photosynthesis, plants convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into complex chemicals that form the basic ingredients of our food, medicine, aromas, and more. AVEDA's plant-based products draw upon these potent ingredients for their effectiveness. Our research and development team is continually seeking new uses for plant resources and more sophisticated means of manufacture. We go to great lengths to ensure the authenticity, integrity, and quality of our plant ingredients, searching the globe for wild-harvested plants or those grown without the use of petrochemical fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides.

Petrochemicals are chemicals derived from petroleum. Used as raw materials in the manufacture of many household products, petrochemicals are nonrenewable and can be toxic to people and other living organisms. They pollute our soil, water, air, and bodies. They are widely used because they cost significantly less than pure ingredients extracted from plants. But increased consumption of plant-derived materials would lower their cost, eventually ensuring the ability of the natural environment to sustain itself. For this reason, AVEDA is committed to promoting the use of plant-derived materials.

In the end, issues of environmental and social responsibility will determine the future of our species. At AVEDA, we believe that tomorrow will arrive through the use of renewable resources, sustainable development, and constructive environmental practices. By manufacturing the purest plant products available and using innovative and responsible methods, we are working to set new standards of corporate practice. But the real key to our success, of course, lies in our products. Unmatched in quality and effectiveness, they do what they claim to do. And they do it in such a pleasing manner that you'll want to keep on using them, which is the whole idea.

Where did we get a name like Hugo's? PDF Print E-mail

HugoThe name comes from my younger brother, Hugo. Hugo was born with Down's Syndrome. When you meet Hugo, you instantly feel loved and he will talk up a storm. As kids, my brothers and I would often talk about someday naming a business after Hugo. That dream has now been realized and Hugo is thrilled to have his name "in lights". When you walk through our doors, it's our hope that you will feel an instant acceptance and comfort as if you were meeting him.

Although I'm older than Hugo, he has served as a mentor to me in so many ways. Always positive, Hugo sees everyone with an unprejudiced eye because he loves unconditionally. And he opens himself up to trying new things. At our grand opening, Hugo was there to greet our guests. He surprised us all when he took the microphone and sang along with the band. He was so great; if I had closed my eyes I could have been listening to Frank Sinatra. We didn't know he could do that, so once again I learned a lesson from Hugo-when you dare to try without being afraid, we surprise ourselves with what we achieve.
